Trauma Therapy and EMDR
MOVING BEYOND SURVIVAL TO EMPOWERED LIVING
Trauma Therapy and EMDR
Are you haunted by the invisible and heavy burden of past trauma? The effects of unprocessed trauma can be debilitating, leading to PTSD symptoms that disrupt your everyday life and relationships. These might include recurring flashbacks, intense stress reactions to triggers leaving you feeling hypervigilant, and a general feeling of disconnection from those around you. This struggle often creates a challenge to live in the present and look ahead to the future with optimism. Trauma therapy such as EMDR is specifically geared to treat this chronic stress state.
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is a groundbreaking and extensively researched method specifically designed to alleviate the distress associated with traumatic memories. Different than talk therapy, EMDR focuses on your brain's natural ability to heal, kind of like how the body recovers from physical injury.
During EMDR sessions, I guide you through a structured process that involves recalling distressing images while experiencing bilateral stimulation (typically with hand-held devices). This allows your brain to reprocess the trauma, reducing its emotional impact and allowing you to recall these memories with significantly less disturbance.
I was skeptical about EMDR before I began practicing it and was surprised to see how quickly clients can move through memories that have plagued them for years, decades sometimes. While this modality is not for everyone, it can be an impactful tool. After determining appropriateness, we will work together to create a safe space where you can confront and reprocess traumatic memories which can lead to a reduction in trauma-related symptoms and a greater sense of personal empowerment. This journey is about more than just managing symptoms; it's about unlocking your potential for a richer, more connected, and fulfilling life.
